Annual Charity Lacrosse Tournament Set for July 20/21

[ Back ]

The 2002 high school and college lacrosse season is over, but you can still see some of the finest players in the game compete for honors in the annual Glastonbury Lacrosse Tournament, July 20 & 21, at the Glastonbury High School (GHS) campus. The competition, dating back to the late 1980s, is held each summer to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis and American Cancer Societies. Over the course of the weekend, 30 teams will be tested in 81 games until the champions and runners' up are crowned. At any given time you can see one of six games being played simultaneously on contiguous fields across the GHS complex.

This competition is one of the largest in the country, and in addition to the many local stars, draws top caliber players from all levels of the game. The charity event has long been knows as a "player's tournament", teams formed around cores of local and national stars of the game. A few teams come with corporate sponsorships, while the majority are self-funded by the players themselves. Top Division I & III collegiate teams such as Syracuse, Princeton, Johns Hopkins and Maryland will be represented.

Teams are seeded in one of three divisions, Green, Blue and Red, and each plays four games on Saturday in the preliminary round. The top eight in each division go on to Sunday's final competition. Imagine the stamina and conditioning required for a team to go all the way and play seven full games over the course of two days, some with only an hour rest between whistles!

What is the cost of this super event? Admission is FREE! Do you have a budding lacrosse star in the family? Bring them down to the high school to see the fastest sport on two feet! Volunteers are welcome. Refreshments and memorabilia will be available throughout the competition, with all proceeds going to the two charities. For more information, contact tournament director, Joe Cooper, at 633-0169 or check out the official tournament web site at www.glastonburylaxtourney.org.
